Georgia, a post-soviet union state, has been engaged with EU ascension talks. On 8 November 2023, the European Commission issued an official recommendation to grant candidate status to Georgia, which was confirmed on 14 December 2023.
Recently, Georgia recently passed a law requiring all NGO's with 20% funding internationally to register as "foreign agents". This law has been nicknamed the "Russia law" as Russia recently passed a similar law. The purpose of this legislation was to deter all foreign news agencies (mostly American/Western Europe) from reporting on the governments corruption. This policy has been incredibly unpopular with most EU officials, and Georgian ascension talks have been paused for now as a result of this policy.
