Pain, poverty and strife by converting to "Sameness", a plan that has made everyone exactly the same socioeconomically, and which has eradicated emotional depth from their lives. Every member of this society are assigned a career by The Council of Alicorns ("The Council"), and are made to believe that The Council is always right. Equestria is isolated from all, except for a few similar nearby towns.
